The Brown Minority Housestaff Association would like to welcome all new interns and fellows to Brown University! We are excited to have you join the Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital/Care New England Family!

The Brown Minority Housestaff Association MED Talks series will continue through this year. We will have great talks on patient centered care and all are welcome to join our lectures.

We would like to welcome our new BMHA Executive Board! Sean Sanker (Med Peds) and Alexis Thompson (Peds) Co-Chair, Luwam Ghidei (OB/GYN) Vice Chair, Matthew Anderson (NSGY), Social Chair

We are excited to announce the start of the BASCE Fellowship aimed to train the next generation of advocates for social change. Through the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, medical students, residents, fellows and attendings will be competitively selected to become a fellow in this new program. The fellowship will feature a year long curriculum including guest speakers and a capstone project aimed to create a community of people who will help bring diversity and inclusion understanding to the medical community

Welcome to the Brown Minority Housestaff Association website!

Thank you for visiting our site. It is our pleasure and honor to serve as BMHA Co-Chairs for the 2018-2019 academic year. We are truly commited to establishing and maintaining a deep sense of community here at Brown. We value the tenets of diversity and inclusion and recognize the integral role these principles play on our personal wellbeings and the care that we offer to an ever diverse patient population. Our goal for the academic year is to enrich our BMHA community by:

  • Assisting in creating and sustaining an anti-racist environment across all of our teaching hospitals
  • Engaging in underrepresented in medicine (URM)  medical student mentorship
  • Building our network of URM faculty to assist with ongoing professional and personal development
  • Supporting our members' mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing as we all navigate the fulfilling but trying experiences of residency

We eagerly anticipate attending as many recruitment events as possible through regional and national conferences, and look forward to augmenting our already robust diversity and inclusion action plans. We will continue to host Grand Round Speakers adept at addressing healthcare disparity and inequity, and are excited about implementation of faculty development work shops addressing bias and racism in the workplace. The BMHA is dedicated to service, mentorship, and professional development. Please join us for an exciting year!

Sincerely,

Alexis Thompson, MD (Pediatrics) and Sean Sanker, MD (Med Peds)

Co-Chairs, The Brown Minority Housestaff Organization
